THE HABIT - 72 Hour Juice Cleanse

The Habit Ayurveda

Time to get fresh.

As the seasons change, my body feels a wee bit sluggish. I’m congested, foggy, a little slower than I should be. I’ve also rediscovered my love of carbs and heavy foods.

In Ayurveda, spring is referred to as kapha season. There’s a buildup of dampness or heaviness in the air, the ground, and within us. As the ice begins to melt, and new spring growth happens, we too feel the urge to shake off the old and step into the new. It’s time to freshen up.

As summer turns to winter, the air is dry and we’ve accumulated a lot of heat. Our bodies thrive on grounding, sweet foods that lubricate and nourish us for the winter months ahead.

An AWESOME way to do this is with an Ayurvedic Detox - a 10-day process where you remove all that’s not serving you from your internal and external environment. It’s deeply cleansing. Click here to learn more about whole body ayurvedic cleansing.

Ayurveda teaches us to cleanse with the seasons for whole-body wellness year-round.

Looking for a whole body cleanse?

In your basic Ayurvedic detox the first few days are spent with a focus on eating a plant based diet, removing heavy foods and preservatives.

The 3-5 day deep cleanse period involves extra cleansing and digestive boosting foods, and physical practices to move toxins from the body.

The final 3 days are spent easing back into your regular routines, but with a more permanent shift in your daily routines, and eating habits. Do you know why this happens?

Because you’ll feel so good, you’ll crave more of it.

Like increases like. The more you eat of something, the more you’ll want it. In a 3 day juice cleanse, you’re positively assaulting your taste buds with fresh, bitter, astringent, naturally sweet and sour flavors that a bag of cool ranch doritos couldn’t hold a candle to. You’re crowding out the bad foods, by offering soooooo many good ones. The result, in my experience, has been a renewed taste for all things healthy and crisp. You’ll be fresh like lettuce, friend.

cleanse & Detox Tips from The Habit

Recommended Juicers

There are 2 types of juicers on the market - Masticating and Centrifugal.

Masticating juicers work by pressing the juice from the plant, where centrifugal juicers grate the plant to bits and extract the juice. Apparently masticating juicers maintain more nutrients from the plant, and extract more juice, but they come at a premium. We took the jump and invested in an Omega masticating juicer, and its AMAZING. Also it makes sorbet which the kids love. Last year we bought my dad a Breville Juice plus centrifugal juicer and he loves it and uses it every day.

Cost

People often assume (likely because of the price of buying fresh pressed juice from the store) that juicing isn't affordable. We purchased all the ingredients listed in my fancy infographic times 2 (for me and the hubbs), and the total cost was $84. So $42 per person → $14 per day → $1.75 per cup of juice. Hands down the most worth it thing I’ve done to feel instantly amazing (although there are a few other things I do, too).

Preparation & Easing In

Paring down your diet in the week before a juice cleanse is a MUST. Otherwise your body won't be ready to not receive so much food, leading to backsliding and sadness. We want to ease in, not jump in.

In the easing in week we stick to soups and stews. Here’s a couple of our quick and easy faves:
