The Kardashian Panchakarma Cleanse
I have to admit, I haven’t been keeping up with the Kardashians.
I've never known what the show is about, or anything about the lives of this family.
But recently a friend brought up an episode over coffee - the one where Kourtney and Travis do an Ayurvedic detox.
… k I’m interested.
Episode 7 of season 1 of The Kardashians (I guess there’s no keeping up anymore) finds Kourtney and Travis trying a Panchakarma cleanse after an unsuccessful IVF egg retrieval process.
Ayurvedic cleansing is used to remove toxins and undigested "matter" from the body (according to this article, you could be carrying anywhere from 7-20lbs of stuff in your intestines) leading to:
increased mineral, vitamin and nutrient absorption,
improved metabolism,
increased immunity,
and improved emotional well-being (I’m sure you’ve heard that up to 90% of the body’s feel-good chemical serotonin is created in the gut)
Looking for a whole body cleanse?
Ayurveda teaches that fertility (as well as “OJAS” - a general sense of vitality or vibrancy in life) comes naturally when we cleanse, open pathways and nourish all tissue in the body.
In the Ayurvedic study of human pathology, we learn that there are seven “Dhatus”, or types of tissue in the body.
Rasa (Plasma/lymph)
Rakta (Blood)
Mamsa (Muscle)
Meda (Fat)
Asthi (Bone)
Majja (Nervous system)
and Shukra (Reproductive tissues) Not only connected to fertility; On a psychological level, shukra dhatu is related to the ability to sustain creativity.
The food you eat nourishes each of these tissues one after the other in succession, from the lymph to the reproductive tissues.
A build up of mucous, feces, and other unwanted matter along the intestinal walls dampens the body's ability to properly absorb and assimilate nutrients and properly nourish the body.
Doing a Panchakarma cleanse, Kourtney and Travis were using ancient Ayurvedic practices to open, nourish and tonify all layers of tissue in their bodies, resulting in strong OJAS, and hopefully strong fertility.
Throughout the Kardashians episode Kourtney and Travis engage in a number of different practices common to panchakarma, or Ayurvedic cleansing.
This includes abstinence from sex and exercise, caffeine, alcohol and sugar, going to an Ayurvedic spa for FOUR HOURS A DAY for all kinds of oil treatments, foot baths, yoni steaming, and eating rice pudding and talking about ghee and castor oil and Kourtney’s tongue.
For anyone who hasn’t heard of Ayurveda or done an Ayurvedic cleanse, these things might sound (and look) hella strange.
But as you might have heard at the beginning of epi 8, Kourtney reported “Guys, I’ve never felt better than after my cleanse”.
I really, REALLY want you to feel like post-panchakarma Kourtney Kardashian.
In upcoming blogs I’ll be giving a little background to the practices shown during "the Kardashian cleanse epi", and more importantly, explain HOW TO DO THEM AT HOME (because you don’t need to go to the spa for 4 hours a day, in order to feel this good).

Though it doesn’t appear to have been the thing that worked for Kourtney and Travis on their baby journey, Ayurveda is a wonderful tool for boosting fertility!
